怕被抓不敢去避難所 無證移民死守家園
颶風佛羅倫斯(Hurricane Florence) 為北卡羅來納州帶來強風暴雨之際，住在威明頓 (Wilmington)的無證移民擔心因為沒有合法身分，萬一前往緊急避難所求助，恐將被移民探員逮個正著，淪為遭到遣返的下場，因此選擇留守家園。
為紓解災區無證移民的恐懼，聯邦官員14日表示，目前當務之急在救人，而非押人，當局將不會在颶風侵襲期間執行移民法，除非涉及嚴重公共安全威脅的事件；聯邦急難管理局(FEMA)副局長百拜爾(Brock Long)說：「我們將協助在此風災任何需要幫助的人。」
要求報導中保密姓氏的無證移民女子艾瑞絲(Iris)接受國家廣播公司(NBC)專訪時說，之前聽人說起，颶風來時，無證移民如果到政府機關設立的緊急避難所躲避風雨，必須千萬小心，因為沒有合法身分，不但將遭到拒絕，還可能被 聯邦移民和海關執法局 (ICE)的探員抓走。她說：「我不願孩子們面臨這種風險。」
住在威明頓一處活動屋社區的艾瑞絲，由於下定決心要留守家園，不願撤離，12日便用木板將全家窗戶釘緊。
威明頓市長薩夫歐(Bill Saffo)指出，民眾生命安全是最高考量，沒有人應該為了移民身分而擔心。他說，到底某位民眾是否擁有合法移民身份，「我們並不在乎，我們在乎的是確保生命安全不受傷害。」
艾瑞絲受訪時說，由於威民頓警方已經公開表示，不會在緊急避難所逮捕無證移民導致骨肉分離，才讓她放下心中一塊大石。
由於風雨強烈，艾瑞絲13日終於帶著孩子到市政府在附近學校設立的緊急避難所求助。她說，離家之前，年紀最小的孩子問她說：「媽媽，我很怕我們家會被吹垮，但我不想去避難所，因為我不想跟妳分開。我寧死也不想跟妳分開。」
